The Milk + Cookies Festival is set to return to South Africa this summer, bringing its curation to Cape Town on January 29th and Johannesburg on January 31st, 2027. Next year’s event follows two successful editions that collectively attracted over 50,000 attendees. The festival is known for its eclectic music lineup, featuring unexpected artists each year; for instance, Kaytranada headlined its South African debut in 2025, drawing 20,000 attendees, while this year’s edition featured Gunna, bringing total attendance to over 30,000 across both cities.
Notably, the event encompassed a robust Milk + Cookies Music Week programming, showcasing more than 50 local and international artists and generating over 3,500 jobs in production, vendor services, and hospitality. Each edition is designed to be unique, intentionally varying in musical genre to cater to the audience present, emphasizing an experiential atmosphere rather than adhering to a specific style. Chase Freeman, the Head of Marketing, encapsulates this ethos with the phrase, “Never the same sound, always the same feeling,” highlighting that the festival curates experiences based on the audience’s mood rather than genre classifications.
The festival is integrated within a broader cultural program that celebrates music, food, fashion, art, and design, with various accompanying activities such as panels, workshops, pop-ups, and parties. Each edition is predominantly built around South African artists and creators, aiming for local community involvement in both the creative and operational aspects of the event. Co-founder Kevin Reese emphasizes their commitment to collaboration with local residents, stating that their approach has evolved from simply putting on shows to deeply engaging with and empowering the local culture.
The festival’s organisers plan to announce the South African artists participating first, with the headlining act revealed subsequently, and additional Music Week programming updates expected in the coming weeks leading up to the festival.
